Some people do not believe that there is only one alcohol. One pint of beer has more alcohol in it than for example a shot of vodka, who would have thought? According to the survey, only one in ten people. The Union of Producers and Importers of Liquors has thus come up with an awareness campaign as part of their ‚Drink responsibly‘ program.

There is only one alcohol and its effects are the same, only difference is in the concentration.

The main hero of the campaign is Pepa Vípil. Wine, beer, liquor… that’s his thing and his knowledge will blow your mind. For Pepa it is not important what you drink, but rather how much of it you drink.

«A pint of beer is much better than a shot of rum, because it has less alcohol in it, so it must be less harmful.»

Pepa Vípil’s task is to pass on important facts, to disprove long-standing alcohol myths, such as the division of alcohol into soft and hard drinks, and to educate the public about responsible alcohol consumption. There is only one alcohol everywhere and Pepa knows that counting few numbers never hurt anybody. His aim is to teach society to think about alcohol in clearer numbers and to refute the assumptions about different types of alcohol, because it is the quantity of alcohol, that matters the most.

Pepa has been joined by four of his colleagues: Mr. Vinař and Mrs. Vinařová, Pivař and Panákovač. As their names probably suggest, each of the colleagues prefers some type of an alcoholic beverage. The goal of the new characters is to point out the misconceptions that are often associated with individual drinks and disprove them.

I think, therefore I drink responsibly.

Excise duty

One of the inequalities that alcohol has to face in the Czech Republic is taxation. Despite the fact that liquors account for only 28 % of total alcohol consumption, 60 % of the excise tax collection for 2020 fell on their sector. This is due to the uneven excise duty, which puts liquors at a disadvantage compared to other alcoholic beverages. For example, for still wine, whose consumption is still increasing, the excise duty is zero, while for liquors it is constantly rising – at the beginning of 2020 it was even increased by another 13.2 %.

In the Czech Republic, liquor has the highest excise duty.
«Through uneven taxation, state institutions create a misleading impression in society that wine or beer contains a different type of alcohol than liquor. The unevenness in excise taxation dramatically increases discrimination between individual types of alcoholic beverages and consumer disorientation.»
